Feng Shui (literally: "wind and water") is teachings, which try to bring areas in harmony with its environment. Originally it concerned with the Feng Shui Geomanty. Traditional interpretation is concerned with the spirit of air and the water with Feng Shui "bent to make".  

The principles of the Feng Shui can apply to the arrangement and use of furniture, house architecture and landscape design. The spatial arrangement takes place due to different rules, which are to guarantee that in these areas it cannot contain bad energies or stop the the flow of the Qi (comparably with the Indian Prana or generally the universal life energy). Thus for example hard edges are avoided, and it is generally paid attention to symmetrical arrangements. The basic idea behind Feng Shui is: Humans have influence on his environment, but the environment has also an influence on humans. After the Feng Shui teachings the most favorable situation of a house on half height of a mountain/hill, at a south slope, with outlook on water. Water as jumping wells or artificial pond plays a large role in the Feng Shui, since water is understood to be able to cleane negative energy.  

Five Elements and Feng Shui  

An important role plays the five-element teachings in the Feng Shui beside the Yin and Yang teachings and the eight Trigram aligned after the directions also. Feng Shui is still very strongly believed in modern China, and practically each larger building project is advised by a Feng Shui master. For some years the theories of the Feng Shui experience also increased interest in western architecture and interior decoration.  

From the perspective of rational scientific methods, the idea of an energy flow (Qi) is that the spatial arrangement by furniture or house architecture to be steered in order to provide good prosperity, luck, health and creativity, and to ensures avoidance of unwanted matters, such, as ghosts, hsa (stoppage) or Tsung (crossing)  

Feng Shui contains however also comprehensible aspects of the harmony teachings and behavior biology: Humans like to sit places favoring their psychological and mental comfort so that sitting with the back facing the door, sitting in the restaurants tables at the edge or the corner and humans feel certain colors, forms or materials as harmonious and pleasant or as unpleasant.  

The traditional Feng Shui - thousands of years old teachings, which have its roots in Chinese philosophy. New Feng Shui like Feng Shui is recognized in the western world not as science and is not classified as pseudo-science.  

In the mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong however are still established new and above ground structures according to the rules of these thousands of years old teachings. In tne meantime architect also blend the west architectual principles with traditional Feng Shui.
