The place is barely surviving under a great pressure to tear it down since as the place must have served its historical function. If you happens to be in Taipei, and is desperately seeking a chance to hear Peking Opera singing, you will be able to satisfy your craving by visiting a singing hall called bai2 jin1 (white cold) Palace in xi1 men2 ding1. You may not see top-notch singers because the location is dubious (originally settled for popular songs) but you will be surprised by seeing many famous Peking Opera actors and actresses. Besides admission ticket, a guest is expected but not required to tip a singer he or she adores. There are lots of piao4 fang2 (amateau club) in Taipei. Some are located in tea houses which are not exactly the theater tea houses in the old days in China. Every Saturday, between 2 and 6 pm, The zheng yi1 Tea House on han4 zhong is open to public for singing and auditing. You will run into many top instrumentalists and singings from mainland China and Taiwan. 3rd Fl., #156 han4 zhong St. in xi1 men2 ding1, Taipei ----------------------------------------------------- Peking Opera for Tourists Starting 1998 summer, the Fushing Peking Opera School will offer Peking Opera performance shows for tourists at the school, a time honored tradition in Taipei. If you or your friends are visiting Taipei, do not miss this opportunity. You will see the school teaching activities and performances. There are many groups which practice in different areas of the long corridor surrounding the park. Many of the Piao-you (amateau performers) have been there since the park was built. If you are able to sing, you may request the Jingfu players to accompany your singing. It is my favorite place to go whenever I visit Taipei. Some of them may also help you with problems in singing and playing. They know their thing well. --------------------------------------------------------------- Where to buy tickets? A ticket center which controls the ticketing network of major theaters called Nien-Dai System (02 27062661) (02 27020997) (02 23419898) can tell you details of most scheduled performances and sell you tickets.
