The Lore of Chinese Lute

夫此者內也、彼者外也、故老子曰．去彼取此、蟬蛻鏖埃之中、優遊 忽荒之表.亦取其適而已.樂由中出.故是此而非彼也.然眾樂琴為 之首. 古之君子.無間隱顯.未嘗一日廢琴.所以尊生外物養其內也。 茅齋蕭然.值清風拂幌、朗月臨軒、更深人靜、萬籟希聲、瀏覽黃 卷、閑鼓綠綺、寫山水於寸心、歛宇宙於容郲.恬然忘百慮．豈必虞 山目耕、雲林清閔、蔭長松、對白鶴、乃為自適哉、藏琴非必佳、彈 曲非必多、手應乎心 斯為貴矣、丙子秋莫、於宛平得一琴、殆明清 間物、無銘、撫之鏗鏘有餘韻、弗敢冒高士選雅名、銘之曰、無名． 非欲以觀眾妙、冀有符於遊德之云。 余既作琴道七巷、意有未盡、更申之加右、然於所欲言、未磐什 一云。

8 Having climbed a mountain
9 Resting in a valley
10 Roaming along waterside
11 In a boat.
12 Resting in the shadow of a forest.
13 When the two essences of nature are briglit and clear

The corresponding set of rules as to when the qin may not be played is much more precise and severe: 在下面情形不可彈琴 When there is wind and thunder, and in rainy weather.
When there is a sun or moon eclipse.
In a market or shop.
br> For a barbarian. For a vulgar person.
For a merchant. For a courtesan
After inebriation
After having had sexual intercourse
In dishevelled and strange clothes
XVhen flushed and covered with perspiration
Not having washed one's hands and rinsed one's mouth
In loud and noisy surroundings

和蘭:即荷蘭.高羅佩是一位荷蘭外交官。因為仰慕中華文化而攻漢學。 一生以做一位君子為尚。琴棋書畫無一不專。為人謙沖好學。專崇孔道。

容乃公稱頌他是最後的一位中國人。因為從他之後中國人最尊崇的琴道己不復矣.
